"What do [men] demand of life and wish to achieve in it?
The answer to this can hardly be in doubt. They strive after happiness; they want to become happy and they want to remain
so." Sigmund Freud
"As we see the nature of desire...as we recognize that attachment to desire is suffering...then
we have the insight of allowing desire to go and the realization of non-suffering, the cessation of suffering." Ajahn Sumedho

There has been a growing acknowledgement in recent years that
psychoanalytic theory and Buddhist psychology have much to offer each other. Western psychotherapists are attracted to Buddhist
psychology because of the natural interplay between the two theories. Mindfulness meditation is at the heart of Buddhist psychology
and is a form of meditation that focuses on moment-to-moment awareness. It is a method for calming the mind as well as for
learning to observe more closely one's experiences, feelings and thoughts.

buddhaonthecouch.com introduces the intersection of psychoanalytic
theory, Buddhist psychology and the practice of mindfulness meditation for clinicians interested in integrating this body
of knowledge into their clinical work. Our mission is to provide a resource for psychotherapists in the Philadelphia area
who wish to explore Buddhist psychology, psychoanalytic theory and mindfulness meditation and their application to clinical
practice.
